Northway provides air transportation for people canoeing the wilderness rivers of eastern Manitoba. These rivers include the Bloodvein, Berens, Pigeon, Poplar, Gammon, and Leyond. As there are numerous drop-off points please contact us for a quote for your particular trip.
The Bloodvein River is very popular for a number of reasons. It is a Canadian Heritage River and it is also very economical to paddle. At the mouth of the river is the native community of Bloodvein where the Department of Highways operates a ferry service once a day, Monday to Friday, free of charge. This means you only have to pay for one charter into your drop-off point because the ferry can bring you back to the end of PR234 free of charge. We will then pick you up or bring your vehicle down to the end of the road for you. All other rivers require two air charters - one to drop you off and one to pick you up again.
The type of aircraft you will require depends on the size of your group. The general rule of thumb for our aircraft is as follows: the Otter can haul a group of 4 people with 2 canoes; the Beaver can haul a group of 2 people with one canoe; and the Cessna 185 can take one canoe without any passengers. Payloads of the aircraft are drastically reduced when hauling an external load such as a canoe.
We do not provide outfitting services or any canoeing equipment.
We will rent canoes with advance reservations, but we do not
provide paddles or lifejackets. Our canoes are well-used
17 foot, Old Towne, Penobscott's and are suitable for rivers such
as the Bloodvein. They rent for $25 each per day; or $20 each
per day if being rented for more than 4 days.
