Why are we here?

Northway Aviation was started over 40 years ago by our grandparents Geiri and Anne Johnson. From meager beginnings hauling fish and trappers, Northway has grown from one aircraft to a fleet that in the past has peaked at thirteen. The family has been deeply involved through the years and now the second and third generations together have taken Northway to where no one could have imagined it would go.

In the early 90's the vision began, to relocate our wheel and float plane bases to reduce mileage to the destinations which we fly. A large bay near Pine Dock on Lake Winnipeg seemed to be the only natural harbour left on the lake with potential. After driving up and walking in on one of the old bush trails to the lake, a paradise was discovered. Unlike most anywhere on Lake Winnipeg the shale limestone shoreline and rugged wilderness beauty was breathtaking. From there the ideas began to form.

Our fly-in lodge at Sasa-ginni-gak Lake was now only a 25 minute flight compared to the 45 it had been previously. Many of the lodges and outcamps could reduce their flying costs by as much as 60% and scheduled passenger fares and freight costs would also be lowered. The area would be accessible by wheel plane, float plane, boat, snowmobile and by vehicle.

The scenery and beauty of the area would only add to what we developed.

In 1995 construction of the roads and runway began. A 900' long limestone breakwater was built with crushed gravel on top, packed into a beautiful walking path. Floating docks were installed along the shoreline to harbour the floatplanes inside the breakwater. By the spring of '96 our scheduled flights began operating from here daily and in June our restaurant and lounge opened.

Our first three luxury accommodations on the lake opened in January of '97, with the fourth and fifth opening that September. Our Harbourview Rooms and meeting room opened in the spring of 1999.

Biscuit Harbour has become a popular destination resort for everyone from snowmobilers to private pilots, from sailboaters to honeymooners, and from winter-road truckers to canoers. We cater to every interest group, year-round, and don't just provide the necessities but offer so much more.
